Where the dragons meet the sea
Labuan Bajo has transformed from a quiet fishing village into Indonesia's premier eco-tourism destination. The surrounding waters of Komodo National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are home to the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard, and some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet.
The Manggarai people of West Flores have long crafted intricate rattan and bamboo goods, using techniques passed down through generations. The natural abundance of sea grass, rattan, and bamboo in this region provides sustainable raw materials for our home decor collection.
The iconic conical houses of Wae Rebo village — nestled in the highlands above Labuan Bajo — are perhaps the most photographed symbol of Manggarai culture. The same weaving and binding techniques used to construct these houses are reflected in the patterns and structures of the baskets and wall art our cooperative produces.
Maria learned the art of rattan weaving from her mother at age eight. Today at 52 she leads a cooperative of 12 women weavers in Wae Rebo. Her baskets and wall art pieces are characterized by intricate geometric patterns from Manggarai cultural motifs.
